Understanding Rodent Behavior: Why Mice Love Your Home

While Mickey Mouse might be an endearing character at Disney World, real-life encounters with mice are far from delightful. Beyond their nuisance factor, mice pose health risks and property damage, including the notorious engine wire gnawing in cars. Understanding why rodents are drawn to your home is essential for effective pest control strategies.

Warmth, Food, and Water:

  1. Food Sources: Mice are attracted to homes by the promise of food. Crumbs, spilled grains, or improperly sealed food packages are irresistible feasts. Maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas and promptly cleaning up spills can deter rodents from making your kitchen their feeding ground.
  2. Warmth: The cozy engine compartments of cars are appealing nesting spots for rodents seeking warmth, especially in colder climates. Similarly, climate-controlled homes offer refuge from harsh weather conditions. Rodents can exploit even the smallest cracks and holes to enter, making regular inspections and sealing of entry points crucial.
  3. Water: Like humans, rodents require water for survival. Leaky faucets, pet water bowls, and moisture in basements provide accessible water sources. Periodically checking for leaks and ensuring proper drainage can reduce the attraction of rodents seeking hydration.

Taking Action:

  1. Proactive Measures: Regular cleaning and maintenance routines, including sweeping or vacuuming floors and sealing food containers, can minimize food availability. Addressing water leaks and ensuring proper drainage mitigates water sources attractive to rodents.
  2. Professional Assistance: If evidence of rodents is discovered, prompt action is necessary to prevent structural damage and health risks. Professional rodent control companies can conduct thorough inspections and implement effective strategies to eradicate infestations.

Conclusion:

Understanding the factors that attract rodents to your home empowers you to take proactive steps to prevent infestations. Maintaining cleanliness, sealing entry points, and addressing water issues can create an inhospitable environment for mice and safeguard your property from their destructive tendencies. Prompt action and professional assistance are crucial in addressing rodent infestations effectively and protecting your home and family from associated risks.

Good traps! Read instructions and be patient...

Bought a couple of different traps, had most success with these. They are bigger and seem to be stronger than the others we purchased. And these were cheaper.

Gloves and instructions were very useful.

Keeping human scent off the traps and allowing the rats time to get used to them (baiting but not setting) etc. has helped catch a trap-shy rat.

Work every time - with the right bait

I have a neighbor with a huge overgrown garden (her house looks like a horror movie set as well). Consequently over the last few years we have the autumn influx of critters which move into my sheds for the winter. They even dug under the ground to come in via the floor! I have tried everything available to be kind to them, then to poison them then to trap them. Only death works because there are so many breeding mice next door. These traps are failsafe. Box has warnings in about useless bait (like cheese, peanut butter etc) and also comes with gloves and brushes to get rid of fleshy ick. You need a 2-pronged attack – I have heeded the advice and only put about six grains of poison in the middle well in each trap. I then set trap and dropped only about 2-3 grains beside trap to have a trail going to trap. Every single day I have set two traps as an experiment and every day I have caught two mice.

Note at end of November: I have now caught two mice a day for 16 days – found out they came in via a mole tunnel underground then chewed through a wall. I filled up hole n have no more since – using this method NOT ONE MOUSE HAS BEEN TRAPPED BY LEG ETC and all die quickly by instant effect as their eyes are still open in surprise. Not cruel and no lingering suffering for them, just instant.
