How to Get Rid of Pigeons?

Believe it or not, pigeons can pose a considerable challenge to human communities, despite their apparent charm. Due to the potential for disease transmission and property damage associated with pigeons, pest control measures often incorporate strategies to deter these birds.
When it comes to eliminating pigeons, practical traps and deterrents are the most effective options to ensure these birds are kept away from your property. Falconry, anti-bird spikes, parallel wires, bird netting, bird gels, decoy kites, and lasers all prove effective in discouraging pigeons from roosting on your property.

Understanding Pigeon Behavior

Pigeons, known as feral pigeons, are renowned for their beauty but are also feared for their troublesome behavior. These birds often gather in a behavior called roosting, noticeable when large groups congregate on rooftops and the sides of buildings. Despite efforts to avoid feeding pigeons, inadvertently dropped grain-rich foods and open waste bins contribute to their presence.
Much like cockroaches and bed bugs relying on humans for sustenance and shelter, pigeons share this dependency on grains for survival. This dependence makes them common around agricultural sites, feed processing plants, parks, recreational areas, and urban restaurants. While this may not initially seem alarming, pigeons regularly deposit waste on sidewalks and buildings, leading to structural damage over time. Additionally, the presence of pigeon waste poses slip hazards, and feral pigeons can carry various diseases.
Given these concerns, understanding how to get rid of pigeons becomes a pertinent question.

Humane Pigeon Deterrence

Killing pigeons or any wild bird species is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. Consequently, the emphasis is on repelling pigeons, with falconry being a natural and effective method. Allowing birds of prey to circle and fly over problematic areas triggers the pigeons’ fight-or-flight response, signaling that the territory is occupied by a predator.
Falconry proves to be a humane and sustainable way to rid your property of pigeons. Unlike other methods like spike strips or deterrents, falconry does not pose harm to the birds.

Additional Measures to Keep Pigeons Away

While falconry stands out as a natural and effective form of pest control, other measures can complement efforts to discourage pigeons. These precautions include removing bird feeders, avoiding leaving food and water accessible to pigeons, and employing diverse deterrent methods.
Explore various methods to deter pigeons:

– **Anti-Bird Spikes:** Attachable spikes prevent pigeons from perching or nesting in specific areas without causing harm. (Please see our shop)

– **Parallel Wires:** Wires running across structures prevent pigeons from landing and nesting. (Please see our shop)

– **Bird Netting:** Mesh netting acts as a barrier to keep pigeons out of certain places.

– **Bird Gels:** Sticky repellents create a translucent barrier, making a bird’s feet stick to surfaces.

– **Decoy Kites:** Kite-shaped decoys sway in the wind to discourage pigeons from landing.

– **Lasers:** Pigeons can be deterred by piercing lights initially, but they may adapt over time.

Pigeon Dislikes and Rooftop Solutions

Pigeons are averse to dominant bird presence and strong smells like cinnamon or hot pepper. Falconry remains an effective method due to the mimicry of basic flight patterns.
For rooftop concerns, bird netting or parallel wires require minimal upkeep and effectively keep pigeons away. Decoy kites demand less installation but must not become familiar to the birds. Falconry, given its resemblance to pigeon flight patterns, is an easy and effective choice.

Repellent Smells

Strong scents like pepper or essential oils may deter pigeons temporarily. Consistent application of these scents in roosting and nesting spots is necessary for lasting effectiveness.

Good traps! Read instructions and be patient...

Bought a couple of different traps, had most success with these. They are bigger and seem to be stronger than the others we purchased. And these were cheaper.

Gloves and instructions were very useful.

Keeping human scent off the traps and allowing the rats time to get used to them (baiting but not setting) etc. has helped catch a trap-shy rat.

Work every time - with the right bait

I have a neighbor with a huge overgrown garden (her house looks like a horror movie set as well). Consequently over the last few years we have the autumn influx of critters which move into my sheds for the winter. They even dug under the ground to come in via the floor! I have tried everything available to be kind to them, then to poison them then to trap them. Only death works because there are so many breeding mice next door. These traps are failsafe. Box has warnings in about useless bait (like cheese, peanut butter etc) and also comes with gloves and brushes to get rid of fleshy ick. You need a 2-pronged attack – I have heeded the advice and only put about six grains of poison in the middle well in each trap. I then set trap and dropped only about 2-3 grains beside trap to have a trail going to trap. Every single day I have set two traps as an experiment and every day I have caught two mice.

Note at end of November: I have now caught two mice a day for 16 days – found out they came in via a mole tunnel underground then chewed through a wall. I filled up hole n have no more since – using this method NOT ONE MOUSE HAS BEEN TRAPPED BY LEG ETC and all die quickly by instant effect as their eyes are still open in surprise. Not cruel and no lingering suffering for them, just instant.
