The Pest-Asthma Connection: How Household Pests Can Worsen Childhood Asthma

Suppose you’ve observed your child’s once mild symptoms of a runny nose and watery eyes escalating into more serious respiratory issues like asthma. In that case, you might be wondering if there’s a connection between pests and asthma. The answer is a resounding yes. Here’s why some of the most common household pests can worsen allergy and asthma symptoms and even contribute to the development of asthma in children.

Cockroaches:

These unsightly insects are not just a nuisance; they can also severely affect your child’s respiratory health. Cockroaches are among the most common and problematic pests for exacerbating respiratory issues. They have been linked to the development of asthma in children, especially if one or both parents have a history of asthma or allergies. This highlights the importance of maintaining a pest-free environment to safeguard your family’s health.

Mice & Rats:

While the impact of mice and rats on allergies depends on whether an individual is allergic to them, these sneaky rodents can significantly worsen asthma symptoms in allergic individuals. If you notice that your child’s asthma attacks are more severe at home, it could be due to a rodent allergy. In such cases, seeking professional pest control services promptly is advisable to address the issue effectively.

Dust Mites:

Dust mites, although microscopic, play a significant role in exacerbating asthma and allergy symptoms. These tiny bugs thrive in dust and feed on dead skin cells, making them ubiquitous in household environments. Many people are allergic to the proteins found in dust mites’ bodies and feces, leading to year-round allergy symptoms. To mitigate the impact of dust mites, it’s essential to maintain a clean and dust-free home environment through regular cleaning and dusting routines.
Understanding the connection between household pests and asthma is crucial for protecting your child’s respiratory health. Addressing pest infestations promptly and implementing preventive measures can create a healthier indoor environment for your family. If you suspect that pests contribute to your child’s asthma symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek professional pest control assistance to address the issue effectively and ensure your child’s well-being.

Good traps! Read instructions and be patient...

Bought a couple of different traps, had most success with these. They are bigger and seem to be stronger than the others we purchased. And these were cheaper.

Gloves and instructions were very useful.

Keeping human scent off the traps and allowing the rats time to get used to them (baiting but not setting) etc. has helped catch a trap-shy rat.

Work every time - with the right bait

I have a neighbor with a huge overgrown garden (her house looks like a horror movie set as well). Consequently over the last few years we have the autumn influx of critters which move into my sheds for the winter. They even dug under the ground to come in via the floor! I have tried everything available to be kind to them, then to poison them then to trap them. Only death works because there are so many breeding mice next door. These traps are failsafe. Box has warnings in about useless bait (like cheese, peanut butter etc) and also comes with gloves and brushes to get rid of fleshy ick. You need a 2-pronged attack – I have heeded the advice and only put about six grains of poison in the middle well in each trap. I then set trap and dropped only about 2-3 grains beside trap to have a trail going to trap. Every single day I have set two traps as an experiment and every day I have caught two mice.

Note at end of November: I have now caught two mice a day for 16 days – found out they came in via a mole tunnel underground then chewed through a wall. I filled up hole n have no more since – using this method NOT ONE MOUSE HAS BEEN TRAPPED BY LEG ETC and all die quickly by instant effect as their eyes are still open in surprise. Not cruel and no lingering suffering for them, just instant.
